Chevy el camino driver#

Feeding the massive engine fresh, cool oxygen is a cowl induction hood bolted to a very straight body painted in factory-correct Tuxedo Black. This 1970 LS6 El Camino was restored to original factory specifications by Jen-Jacs restoration in Savannah, Georgia, and features the original, rebuilt LS6 454/450 HP engine, M22 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and 4.10 Positraction rear axle. For comparison, the vaunted 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda touted roughly the same performance specs and couldn’t haul half of the things the El Camino could.

The LS6 El Camino could thunder from 0-60 MPH in 5- or 6-seconds and clear the quarter-mile in 13- to 14-seconds, depending on the rear gearing and the driver that was seriously quick for the day. The LS6 was more than just a big engine, it was a big engine that was well prepped for performance. It was the only thing like it on the road at the time, as even big-block pickups were no match for it in light-to-light or proper dragstrip competition.

A fabulous alternative in the muscle car era, the LS6 El Camino could not only do block-long burnouts, thanks to the light pickup rear end, but that pickup rear end also allowed for the hauling of equipment, tools, toys and more. Most experts agree just about 500 were built and only a handful of authentic LS6 El Caminos remain in existence. Rare, just more than 4,000 Chevrolets were built in 1970 equipped with the LS6 option of those, the rarest was the El Camino.

Buying a brand-new Chevrolet to go fast in 1970 may well have warranted the option of the LS6: 454/450 HP V-8 engine.
